INTRODUCTION:
“If darkness of ignorance is dominating any area, a candle of pure ethical and moral publication can spread the rays of unprecedented knowledge”
From last few decades, publishing industry has been steadily growing in Hyderabad despite many hurdles like the low purchasing power of the public and the lack of facilities. If we talk about overall Book industry in Pakistan then Lahore stands out with its numerous publishing houses and has been the hub of the book industry. But Hyderabad has its exclusive position in this industry.
ISSUES AND PROBLEMS OF BOOK INDUSTRY
NEW TREND: A new trend starts that school courses are now being sold in schools which is one of their cause of loss in business. So trend of purchasing courses from book depots is now gradually going to vanish.
Along with this there are some other factors which influence on their sale:
SOCIAL FACTORS:  sewage, parking, security, stricks and the most awful is electricity. Because during survey, a countable number of shopkeepers have complaints about such things that due to stricks delivery of books and other item becomes late, due to parking and sewage problem on the roads customers avoid to come on their shops, as it destroys the beautification of shop.
PIRATED BOOKS: Another problem which generally people knows is “ pirated books”, which is very much common in our society. Famous writers spend their time and money for a perfect piece of writing   and then some publishers copies it on low quality paper and sells it at their own rates. Some publishers, who just recopy material from some international author and make money by claiming it as their own, as they have 100% profit on pirated books.
DECLINE IN READING HABBITS: There has been a visible decline in reading habits from last 8 to 10 years. This can be attributed to a number of factors like television, internet and other means of entertainment. During  survey shopkeepers told us that before  8 years when our education system was not corrupt we had large number of customers even teenagers who purchase books on weekly and even sometimes on daily bases but now our education is totally a black business and secondly emergence of technology divert minds of our students towards other things which removes reading habits from their life According to shopkeepers “we have much variety of books but not readers”.
PUBLISHERS: The business of book depots is badly influenced due to publishers as their late delivery of books and due to shortage of books it decreases the reputation of shop. If customer is time to time coming on any book depot and having excuse from shopkeeper then next time reader will avoid to visit that shop so this is basically the fault of publishers but impacts on the reputation of shop. This practice is mostly done by STB (Sindh Text Book Board). Many times it happens that by new year publishers wrote new prices on book and not cut old one so due to double rates customers thought that it’s written by sellers so they often parents fight on such things.
Example: If a text book having price 200 rup in 2013 then in 2014 publishers increase the rate upto 220 rup. Both are written on that book so customers thought that new rate is written by sellers not by publisher, so this thing influence on the sale of shop.
Law breakers should be punished strictly at each level and dealt with an iron hand. Every citizen of Pakistan irrespective of their age and occupation starts to realize their own duties. It is possible when people get consciousness and make a distinction between good and awful.
UNIQUENESS: A book depot in Latifabad name “Shahbaz Book Depot” has donation system in their shops. Parents donate their books here then those who can’t afford new books use these books.
α       YADGAR BOOK DEPOT:  The shop Yadgar was owned by Mohammad Yousif Dehalavi. This shop was located near Urdu Bazar and inaugurated in1960s. Initially they started from journals and copies, then published own guides, stationary and later on converted into book depot.

NEWS: From survey we come to know that about 20% students go to government schools and remaining 80% students go to private schools, and only 5%  book depots having both government and private courses while remaining have only private school cources.
Another thing is that in the in the business of sailing and purchasing sellers normally have 15% profit on each item and then due to black business they earn 20-30% profit on general books, 50% on guides and 100% on pirated books.
ISSUES AND PROBLEMS CREATED BY BOOK INDUSTRY
In spite of providing with bundles of good, informative & inspiring books, Book industry in Hyderabad also creating some problems which have direct impact & influence on our young generations. We can say that latest technologies tracking us on wrong path although this statement is correct but along with this some statues of our society de_tracking our teenagers and BOOK INDUSTRY is one of them.
Publishing and sailing of guides, solved papers, reference books are the most powerful way to de trackteenagers. Students know that if they don’t go to schools and colleges throughout the year, they would have no loss because they can purchase solved papers, guides, reference books and othersuch type of things at the end of session, in which all solved material related to their course outline is available and by using such things they can easily pass examination. Guides of Ali series are very common in use. Students know that if they don’t study, do not attend lectures whole year, they have no worries as they have such material in which all question are available in solved pattern. These sort of things makes the mind of students “worry free” and they often use of catch words like “don’t worry friends paper hojaiga” , “boring lecture sabahtar ha ka hum paper saphlasolved papers la lan”, “yar solved papers hnnatuparhnakekyazarorat ha” ………
According to survey most of the corruption increases due to the funds given by World Bank and IMF because they ply fund for publishing, and here situation is that publishers take funds by showing their list of publishing books but after receiving they just have black paper business. Another thing is that government give a particular amount of subside on each printing paper.Again book sellers and publishers start up their yellow business in this case also, suppose there is need of 1000 papers publishers purchase 500 only and the remaining will purchase from market which is of low quality in this way publishers are earning black money.
Another problem face by our society is that shopkeepers increases their rates on their own demand during the season like in the month of March and August which is the season of purchasing courses and stationaries so public purchase a book of 200 rup in 300 rup because of their need and reputation in society. Just like a Book depot named Ayaz Book Depot have their own rates.

Ø     On general books they gain 30% profit.
Ø     Salesman got 15% profit

Ø     All shop’s profit are their own.

v                        Contribution in society economically

Most expensive book of their shop is between Rs/=1800 to Rs/=5000
Less expensive book of their shop is between Rs/=1800 to Rs/=3000
Problems/Issues:
Vendor said that if cost of any book is Rs/=200 in 2013 and when the cost is increase Rs/=200 to Rs/=210 in 2014 then customers say that this is your personal profit & this is not company rates. And customers sometimes fight with us on increasing of rates.
Profit: 15%
Loss: 5%
2)    Faran Book Depot
M.Arif is the owner of Faran Book Depot. He started their shop in 1962. Faran Book Depot is the 1st and oldest shop between Al-Kitaab and Dawn Book Depot. They have different books in their shop like Schools, Colleges and University books.
Maximum rates of books: Rs/=2200 to Rs/=8000

Vendor said that every person have a different behavior on rates, some of them are fight with us on increasing rates.
Vendor’s message:
People left the reading habits before 7 years ago, but now again the reading habits increasing day by day and mostly university students come in our shop and buy different novel books like Jannat k patty etc. Vendor also said that book readers are mostly in Karachi not in Hyderabad.

Problems/Issues:
We face too much finance problem when company increases the rates without informing us. If we are going to purchase 10 items and we have only Rs 10,000/- for it but at that time cause of increasing in rates we can buy only 9 items in 11,000 rupees. Vendor also said that when price of Oxford book is increase so the customers fight with us and say that this is not company rates this is your personal profit and from this u get extra charges by misguiding us. He also said that sometimes publishers sell out the books in new rates and not mention the actual rates and after purchasing we sell out those books in old rates to the customers and got financial loss.
Vendor’s message:
Shopkeepers should have unity about rates and they must have to speak about increasing rates. When we say to publishers to give concession on rates so, they say that u needs it or not? Company should write new rates in a printing form not in hand written form. Reader’s priority decreasing after 2004. Mobile & internet are the main cause of it. I can’t slap on your face but I say that use your mobile & internet in limits. Too much usage of mobile create disturbance in youth’s life. Cost of Rs/=600 book will be only in Rs/=50 when MNA or MPA’s children will give priority to Government schools and colleges.
Behavior of customers on rates:
Vendor said: Customers fight with us on rates and not understand the difference of company rates. Those customers come on starting of month to purchase anything they have good behavior with us and those customers come at the end of month so, they have rude behavior with us.
