FEATURE: CENTRAL LIBRARY  SINDH UNIVERSITY

UROOSA ANWER RAJPUT

“Libraries are the thin red line between civilization and barbarism.”
Central library is commonly abbreviated in Sindh university by its students as cl.. It is the main library of Sindh university.. This library is functioning from 1975. This building is centrally located at the main location which is now termed as zero point. Which is the centre point of almost all departments of sindh university. The  outer look of this building is quite decent  but internally it seems as a puzzle where a new commer can easliy lost its way.
This library is fully equipped with the huge collection of all type of books including  all departments from science faculty to arts collection, with variety of languages.
As we enter in the library there is main counter in front from where we can issue the required book its left and right side with the main enterance two photostate shops are there at both sides from where the students get benefit. Behind the counter there is a book locker where tags and keys  and references are available which is quite helpful their each book having a code and key which the user use to issue that particular required book. At the left side there is bookbank from where we can easily be the members of central library, along with that there is another big hall which is called as news paper library where 21 different news papers arrive daily in different languages(Eng,Urdu and Sindhi, at the left side there is also a room which facilitate the students where the students got an a.c room where they can easily get benefit from that issued books. At the first floor there is another library  with variety of books for the ease of students,, there is also a room where the check and balance made for the losted books and the requirement of new books are recorded there. At the second floor there are also libraries with separte urdu section in which urdu, persian, urdu poetry and prose books are available, and two computer labs with the facility of internet which is really helpful for the students. Central library is the three story building  and you can reach to the upper floor by the help of those stairs that are located centrally at front side left and right sides are also equipped with the stairs as to provide the multi ways to their 52 department’s student so that they can use any of the side to go upper level and to come back at ground floor from either of that way. Central library is fully air conditioned..
According to Abdul Hafiz Qureshi incharge of  Newspaper library mostly more than 50% students come there to bunk their classes or to pass their time  and they are giving this a name called group study which infact is just oppose it, the  students sit there in groups and usually spend their time in chit chat and they mostly don’t get benfit from any library or from the net café even they usually  do net surfing on social sites like facebook or twitter.
The outer look is decent but internally it’s a puzzle ,, it gives scary look if the light goes out. It is equipped with lifts but unfortunately they are useless,  and there are water coolers at each floor but it usually provides hot water.
One interesting thing is that all the departments of sindh university final year project  theisis submit one copy at their own department and one at central library.
This library possessed the books from 1950 till onwards, and have billions of collection of books.
This central library is not confined to the sindh university  students it’s also for the other educational institutes that are affiliated with sindh university those institute  can also get benefit from it.
The  biggest achievement of this library or about those who want to flourish this library a symbol of it is at the second floor there is holy quran written in hand writing and that is kept in urdu section.
In news paper library there are the portraits and paintings of allam ii kazi which is the great monument of cl.
Its membership is quite cheap any one can afford it it also provide membership for the m.phill and phd students.
